ST MARY - ROMANIAN PARISH & CHURCH IN SYDNEY

The Romanian Orthodox Parish "St.Mary" in Sydney was formed on March 18, 1973, by the people of Romanian origin living in New South Wales and was recognised by the N.S.W. State Authority on October 15, 1973, having at the same time the blessing and approval of the Romanian Patriarchate, as Mother Church.

At the request of the Parish, the Patriarchate nominated in 1975 Fr.Prof.Dr. Gabriel Popescu as permanent priest. The first church building to be used was the Welsh Presbyterian Church in Chalmers St., Redfern.

In 1977 the Parish purchased its own church, a former wooden Methodist church, situated in Linthorn Ave., Enfield South. The management of the Parish is vested in a committee elected by the general meeting.

On the 1st October 2003, Rev Gabriel Popescu retired for health reasons. The Romanian Orthodox Church named Rev PhD Prof Doru Costache as the new priest for St Mary church.

Rev Doru Costache joined the Romanian comunity in December 2004.
